This itinerary explores Plaza de España, a place with unique historical significance that acts as a “hinge” between the old town and the modern city center. Throughout this route, we will witness the contrasts between the noble Alicante of the 18th century and today’s modern architectural landmarks.

🏛️ Tour Itinerary

  • Starting Point: Market and Memory – The tour begins at the steps of the main entrance of the Central Market of Alicante, continuing towards Plaza 25 de Mayo.

  • Traditional Commercial Axis – We walk along Calderón de la Barca Street, one of the most historic streets connecting the Market with Plaza de España, still preserving the commercial atmosphere of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

  • The Square of Contrasts – Arrival at the space formed by three historically contrasting elements: Plaza de España with its romantic garden Panteón de Quijano, the Bullring, and in the background the modern ADDA Auditorium.

  • Return through the Inland Route – We start our way back towards the sea along San Vicente Street, historically the main land access to the city for travelers arriving from inland Spain.

  • The Noble Heart – Entrance to the lower part of the old town through Labradores Street, once the central axis of the noble city during the 18th and 19th centuries before the urban expansion shifted the city center westward.

  • Baroque and Administration – We continue towards the Town Hall, passing by the Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás, Santa Faz Square, and the Convent of the Blood Sisters (Monjas de la Sangre), an outstanding example of Alicante’s Baroque heritage.

  • End at the Old City Gate – We walk along Calle Mayor until reaching what used to be one of the gates of the city walls, the Portal de Elche.
